Lots of thoughts on this book sadly not alot of them are good. Perfect poison uses just last names then just first names and i didnt know who was who (which was really annoying).
The beginning made me feel like i was reading through a doctors file (which was kinda the point), but it was a little much. But i did enjoy the diseases, disabilities, and diagnosis that were mentioned and described in the book. Kristen, a nurse that is also a serial killer. I am going into health care and the main thing my teachers nail into my head is you have to have empathy, compassion and truly want to help people. Kristen missed that class. The 'relationship' between Perrault and Gilbert was strange at first, weird and rushed, maybe it was supposed to be. Henry: I took 30 red pills last night and 20 this morning I drink a 12 pack of beer. They are developing the character of a schizophrenic Henry Henry Hudson so obviously Kristen is going to want to kill him or maybe fall in love with him I can't tell yet but I think he's going to be a victim and I don't want him to be a victim, i want him to live. (Lets see if im right).
Wow within five pages hes dead, but did Kristen do it? Okay so if shes killing people, alot of people and everyone is just saying yeah whatever nothing we can do now. Angel of death seriously come on you people are supposed to be smart. Kristin kills another one and finally someone wants to take her down but doesnt want to say anything without evidence. Walsh good for you. I think this could be a good movie because reading Kristin killing people over and over is getting boring to read but could be speed up nicely in a movie. Like a lifetime cheesy movie not a real movie.
Thoughts throughout the book: Does this book speed up? Why is no one questioning Kristin? Angel of death come on people Last name or first name make up your damn mind. Are ture crime books supposed to be this boring? I hate bashing books but seriously. I’m glad I’m not scheduled for any hospital care in the near future. This book tells the true story of Kristen Gilbert, a registered nurse convicted of killing some patients in a Veteran’s Hospital, and believed to have killed many more.
It is a horrifying tale of a woman on the edge of madness (are all murderers?), and we have a front row seat in watching her life deteriorate. The author does a good job of keeping the reader’s interest, though the court proceedings details do get a bit tedious. He left nothing out. The writing is not as smooth as one might hope for, but true stories are rarely as lyrical as fiction. I would recommend this book to anyone with an interest in psychology, crime or police procedure. I definitely don’t recommend it to pass the time if you are confined to a hospital bed. Read this for a total of 10 hours I think.
Very engaging from start to finish. Contains a lot of jargon a medical or allied practitioner could follow through, otherwise it could sound tedious for an average reader. But this should not turn you off from reading this book because the author did his best to explain jargon in common terms and besides, it paints a picture of what goes inside the mind of a psychopatic serial killer and what made them do things that are considered horrific. This was based on true events. This book was definitely not what I was expecting, when I started getting further into the story and was hit with a full blown murder investigation. This book definitely focused more on the investigation that under went when trying to bring Kristen Gilbert to justice and I was expecting a sort of biography on this woman's life. Indeed it is a very well written true crime. This book is about Kristen Gilbert, a former nurse and an American serial killer who was convicted of four murders and two attempted murders of patients admitted to the Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC) in Northampton, Massachusetts. Quite possibly she took the lives of many others after starting out offing the family pets. Possible, she is the most prolific American female serial killer, or at least in the top ten. I have seen several reviews complain about the length of this book. The chapters being on average about two pages makes for a lot white space and it is an easy read; felt like reading a typical 300-page book, to me. The back cover talks about 'shocking photos', but the picture section has nothing more shocking than a pre-exhumation grave site. Is all over this as a forensic investigator essential in determining cause of death. His is another true crime that I read this summer.
The author is good friends with Gregg Olsen, another great TC writer, so I picked up a few of his books. The story is about Kristen Gilbert, a nurse at a VA hospital in Massachusetts who soon becomes known as 'The Angel of Death' due to the high amount of codes and deaths that occur on her shift. Gilbert's colleagues think of the nickname as a joke as Gilbert is a pretty, young mother and very talented nurse. They just write it off as bad luck.

Gilbert's colleagues think of the nickname as a joke as Gilbert is a pretty, young mother and very talented nurse. They just write it off as bad luck. What they don't know is that she is also a total sociopath, pathological liar, and narcissist. She also has a history of stalking men who break-up with her. Around 1995 she meets a younger security guard at work who she begins an affair with. Soon she leaves her husband for this guy. Per hospital policy every time a code is called the security guard on duty must be present to assist.
Needless to say, the amount of codes and deaths begins to double during the shifts when both are working. There are several instances where she kills her patient just because she wants to leave work early. Finally, other nurses become suspicious due to the amount of blatant flirting going on between Gilbert and her boyfriend. One nurse finally figures out what drug Gilbert is using to kill these guys off and starts keeping track of it. Once they feel they have solid evidence they turn Gilbert in to their boss and an investigation begins. This is where it gets really good.
Gilbert figures out they are on to her immediately and totally goes off the deep end. She fakes an injury to get out of work and then begins stalking those involved in the investigation. You find out also that she had tried to kill her husband and has a history of killing family pets.
This book was just fun to read because Gilbert was such a nut. The thing that bothered me though was how long it took for her to get caught. Although the book and trial focuses on the deaths during her affair, it is likely she was killing throughout her entire career and murdered as many as 50 patients. Also, once the other nurses figured it out they still took FOREVER to do anything about it.
Kristen Gilbert was known as a hardworking, dedicated nurse, however, there were so many emergencies and sudden deaths during her shift on Ward C that colleagues jokingly called her the “Angel of Death”. They had no idea how close they were to the truth. Gilbert was a scheming, manipulative liar and homicidal, narcissistic sociopath, a serial killer. Her victims were her patients, people who trusted her to care for them, her weapon was a syringe filled with lifesaving medicine that used incorrectly can cause fatal heart attacks. Investigators believe she may be responsible for as many as 40 deaths before three of her fellow nurses came forward, unable to ignore the number of deaths on Gilbert’s watch.
In March 2001, she was found guilty of four counts of murder and two counts of attempted murder and sentenced to life imprisonment. When I hear someone recommend a true crime (TC) book because “it reads like a novel” my standard response is, “If I wanted to read something that “reads like a novel, I’ll read a novel”. I believe this is the first TC book by M. William Phelps that I have read but it will not be my last.
He may have just moved into my “favorite TC author slot”. Shh don’t tell Kathryn.
This book has an incredible amount of detail and while not reading like a novel it is not a dry recitation of facts. But there are a lot of things happening, he details the deaths and her actions while working, then her behavior during the investigation, harassing witnesses, stalking and even phoning in a bomb threat to the hospital.
Phelps has brought out the facts you need to know to understand what happened, there is not a lot of skipping about and he gives you the details of the trail, along with the testimony without the dry court transcript feel. I definitely recommend this book to true crime fans.
I've been working in the medical field for a long time. I thought this book was pretty good, but some things like in the beginning about vital signs and low glucose levels were off the mark. Someone not familiar with medical terminology would not recognize this. I was also VERY mad that the pathologist that exhumed bodies and performed autopsies screwed up!!! But at least they nailed this nut regardless!

There are a lot of people in the medical profession for the wrong reasons. A lot of people in the medical field do not actually.care. about people and the medical facilities are run like.businesses. It's all about.money. and the medical establishments DO NOT want a bad rep in the public eye.
Sad but true. Ignoring stuff and brushing stuff under the rug is a.silent policy. I wonder how many she actually killed? I mean, she probably got away with it for so long she didn't think she would ever get caught! And then the bomb threats? What a dumbass she was with that one. My heart goes out to her ex husband and two boys.
This is the second book I have read about a nurse serial killer this year. This one is about Kristen Gilbert who killed patients at a VA hospital in Massachusetts.
Kristen began her adult life as a promising professional, but her sociopath side took over and she terrorized friends, ex-boyfriends, witnesses, even phoned bomb threats to the hospital. Killer nurses are rare (I hope), but those that murder are able to carry on for a long time, even when they are suspected.

Hospital policies, legal fears, and the difficulty of securing the proof needed allow the killer nurses to carry on for a long time. Kristen was finally sentenced to life without parole for four murders, but it is suspected that she may have killed as many as forty patients. Phelps does a good job of carefully telling the story with lots of details. First let me say I am a great fan of this author. He does his research and he writes with honesty and fairness. It must take an enormous amount of time to do the research that goes into a book like this. For 7 yrs the 'Angel of Death' was a nurse for the VA, scary thought that it went on so long.

According to the author, they are heroes and this reader agrees. I've worked with a few nurses but never one I thought would harm a patient, let alone kill one. Kristin Gilbert, obviously a narcissistic sociopath has filed an appeal. Let's hope she never gets out. Incredible, one of the most prolific serial killers America has ever encountered and barely anyone knows her name. Also, since she was a health professional, she had plenty of people covering up, wringing their hands, and making excuses for her appalling behavior - while she was actively poisoning her patients! I was stunned that not only did this VA hospital have a nurse killing patients, but there were also two other nurses addicted to crack and heroin!

I tell you, it is amazing what women can get away with. A great story that only bogged down a bit when it got to the trial, since by then, we basically know what's going to happen. Wish there were more pictures of Kristen.I'd love to know what she looks like today. I wanted ti read this book for several reasons: 1) I am a VA nurse, 2) I know the Leeds VA 3) I have been involved in investigations in the past.
Here is what I can say about this book. This book is very well written and researched. I also think the VA is more aware of statistics at a National level thus this would be almost impossible to happen again. Also drugs are not just restocked anymore and where was pharmacy in this book? They didn't know epi was being used without orders? I guess we'll never know. True crime books are my junk food, and this one was no exception. It was a very interesting case, and I felt the book was well-researched and told. A nurse who randomly injects her patients with lethal drugs is a difficult but fascinating concept to get one's mind around. One of the frustrating things about this book is that there are no real answers offered as to Gilbert's motive, but true crime books are only as good as the author's sources. My guess is that many people stonewalled the author. True crime books are my junk food, and this one was no exception.

This book was an accurate and comprehensive account of Kristen Gilbert's crimes and prosecution. Phelps has obviously done his research, and did a fair job recreating the time line and relating the story in a readable way. Only the first quarter of the book covered Gilbert's commission of crimes, the majority of the book covered her prosecution and trial. I found this part a bit dry, and thus the two stars. If you really love true crime books, this will likely end up on your list.
